redesigning the high heel

In 2012, I received a Chappell Lougee grant from Stanford University's student grant department to fund a footwear research project based at the London College of Fashion in London, England.

It started out as an arts-intensive design project full of color explorations, aesthetic studies, and "mood boards.” I was set on incorporating more color into the monochrome conservatism of the shoe market and so (drawing from my life-long love Converse All-Stars) I started with sneakers.

However, as the summer continued, I got that engineering itch and wanted to go beyond color experimentation. I wanted to focus on structure and function.

New focus: high heels. The most baffling, nonsensical, impractical footwear structure of them all.

Follow the pictures from top to bottom to see the progression of my studies—from flat rubber soles to pin-thin stilettos and metal heel shanks.

high heels.

My goal: to make the most impossible, uncomfortable shoe at least a little more comfortable.

Beginning the Redesign...

... prototyping ...

... and finally - A concept shoe!
